What are some common signs your roof needs repairing?

Some signs that your roof needs repairing can be obvious, while others might be less so. It’s important to check your roof at least a couple of times a year in order to catch any damage before it can worsen. Some of the most common signs that your roof is damaged include:

Water damage – If you notice water running down the walls, damp patches or it smells damp, this could be a sign to check your roof. This is particularly true if you have had a period of heavy rain which could exacerbate existing leaks.

Moss or mould growing outside your roof – Mould or moss thrives in damp conditions and can worsen the condition of your roof. If it grows in between tiles it can force them apart and cause mould to leak into your home as well as other leaks and issues.

Daylight leaking through to your attic to home through the roof – The point of a roof is to keep the outside out, so if you are finding there are shards of daylight breaking in through your roof, it could be a sign there are holes, crack or missing tiles.

Roof tiles that have fallen off or look loose – Whether due to ageing or a storm, if roof tiles look loose this means they could be at risk of falling off and injuring someone as well as leaving your home susceptible to damage from the weather. Check regularly for any missing or loose tiles.

If the roof looks like it is sagging – Over time your roof could sag which leaves it at risk of collapsing in. Check that it is straight in its form is vital to catching a sagging roof before it gets any worse.

If there is debris – Check your gutters for debris as this could be a sign the underlay of your roof is crumbling and falling into the gutter. A few loose grains or shingle is normal, but if you’re finding it regularly or if there is a large amount this could mean there is a problem.

What are different types of roof repairs?

As well as the above problems, there are a number of more specific roof repairs that can rectify the issues you are experiencing.

Emergency roof repairs

Emergency roof repairs happen when your roof has experienced sudden damage that needs to be fixed right away. Often, the most common cause of emergency roof repairs is because there has been extreme weather such as a storm which has caused damage to the roof unexpectedly. Repairs here could include replacing loose tiles, repairing the felt or foundation to flat roofs and fixing any holes that might have appeared. Perhaps something fell down onto the house and caused a hole in the roof – it’s important to get this covered up and fixed as soon as possible.

Repairing and unblocking gutters

Blocked and broken gutters can cause water to accumulate on your roof, causing a host of other issues. It’s important we come and clear these for you so your home can correctly drain water and stop it puddling up or causing rot and damage to the roof of your home itself.

Repairing flat and felt roofs

Flat and felt roofs require slightly different repairs to pitched roofs due to the way they are made. Some of the most common repairs that need to be done to flat roofs include resealing joints to your roof covering, repairing guttering, repairing seals around your skylights and repointing. Sometimes a flat roof might need replacing, if the damages are too bad, but by getting it looked at and fixed sooner rather than later the costs are likely to be less and the need for a replacement should be smaller.

Repairing tile and pitched roofs

Pitched roofs, as with flat roofs, need their own types of maintenance and roof repair. Some of the most common issues with pitched roofs include replacing tiles that are cracked, damaged or defective, sealing cracks, repointing mortar to chimneys, repairing broken guttering and renewing flashing around Velux windows
